Everything you need

These are the questions our guests from overseas ask most. If something is not covered here, please write to us — we are happy to answer before you book.

Before You Visit

Before You Visit

Can we book from overseas, before our trip?

Yes. Please send your preferred dates through the booking form before you travel, and we will confirm availability by email.

We don't speak Japanese — is that okay?

Yes. Our staff aren't fully fluent in English, but many guests who speak little Japanese enjoy the shoot with no trouble. We guide you mainly by showing poses, with gestures and simple English, and we can use a translation app when needed. If there's anything specific you'd like to tell us, feel free to note it when you book.

How long does it take?

About 3.5 hours on the Standard plan, a little longer on Premium (a bridal kimono takes time to put on) — from arrival to departure, short enough to fit into a day of sightseeing.

Where is the studio, and how do we get there?

We're in the Okazaki area of Kyoto (Sakyo-ku), close to Heian Shrine and Okazaki Park. It's about a 10-minute walk from Higashiyama Station on the subway Tozai line, or about 5 minutes from the Okazaki-koen bus stop.

Outfits & Styles

Outfits & Styles

What styles can we choose?

Kimono, dress and concept styles — or your own clothes. Choose the world that suits the two of you.

Is this a pre-wedding photoshoot?

It can be. Many couples book the Premium plan as their pre-wedding photoshoot — a full bridal kimono, an uchikake or hikifurisode, with montsuki-hakama for the groom. It takes about three and a half hours rather than the full day a traditional Japanese photo-wedding usually needs, and there is no ceremony or venue involved. Equally, many couples book it with no wedding in the picture at all.

Can I do a kimono photoshoot on my own?

Yes. Solo Portrait is the same studio, the same wardrobe and the same dressing, photographed on your own — or with a friend. Most solo guests choose a kimono. You do not need to know how to pose: we build the lighting and the framing and talk you through it.

Can we come as a group of friends and each be photographed?

Yes, up to 3 of you. Each of you is dressed, made up and photographed in turn, and each of you receives your own retouched images. The price is per person, from ¥27,500 tax incl. each, so choose how many of you there are when you book. For a party of 4 or more, write it in the message box on the booking form.

What sizes do you have? Will your outfits fit me?

Our wardrobe is Japanese sizing, centred on Japanese M to LL. Japanese sizes run smaller than European and American ones — as a rough guide, Japanese M is around a US 4–6 or UK 8–10, L around a US 8 or UK 12, and LL around a US 10–12 or UK 14.

Kimono is the more forgiving of the two: it is wrapped and tied, so it adapts to a range of body shapes, and height matters more than width. Dresses are less adjustable.

If you are unsure, send us your bust, waist and height when you enquire. We will tell you honestly what we can offer before you book, rather than leaving it to the day. And if nothing we have fits, you are welcome to be photographed in clothes you bring yourself.

Is this a Japanese wedding photo? We're on our honeymoon.

It can be. The full bridal kimono — a colour uchikake or a hikifurisode, with montsuki-hakama for the groom — is our Premium plan: a portrait that marks your marriage, without the time a full Japanese photo-wedding usually takes. If you'd prefer a lighter kimono, komon or furisode, the Standard plan covers that too.

Can we shoot in our own clothes, or with costumes and props we bring?

Yes. We welcome your own clothes, costumes and meaningful keepsakes (there is no limit on the number; for safety, please avoid dangerous items).

Is men's hair & make-up included?

Men's hair & make-up is not included in the basic plan.

On the Day

On the Day & Payment

Do we need a wedding or any special reason?

Not at all. Any couple is welcome — a honeymoon, an anniversary, a proposal, or simply your Kyoto trip.

Can same-sex couples book a shoot?

Yes. Same-sex couples and partners are welcome. An anniversary, a trip to Kyoto, a marriage registration, a welcome board for a reception — we photograph whatever the two of you have in mind.

One note on preparation. Outfits and hair & make-up are arranged around the outfit sizes and the dressing facilities we have. Women's outfits and women's hair & make-up take place in a women-only dressing area, and are therefore available to guests who are physically female. If you would like to check which outfit category or preparation would suit you, please contact us before booking.

Can you photograph us more candidly, without directing us?

Yes, just tell us at the start of the shoot. We normally build the lighting and the framing and talk you through the poses, but we can also work more loosely and photograph you while you talk to each other.

Can we have solo shots as well as couple shots?

Couple shots are the focus, and we are happy to take some solo shots of each of you as well.

How do we pay?

We accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Nicos, UnionPay) and QR-code payments (PayPay, Alipay).
